Suspensions & Exclusions
If a student has been suspended or excluded from a South Australian public school, the school must follow a formal process. Understanding the notice, meetings and next steps can make it easier to prepare and respond.
Suspension
A suspension temporarily prevents a student from attending school. A reconnection meeting is used to discuss what happened, what support is needed and how the student will return to learning.
A suspension cannot be appealed. If you disagree with the decision or process, you can raise the concern with the school or use the Department for Education complaint process.
Exclusion
An exclusion prevents a student from attending their school for a longer period. The school must hold a Directions Conference and recommend an educational program during the exclusion.
An exclusion or extension can generally be appealed within 5 school days of the decision. Appeal information should be provided at the Directions Conference.
Preparing for a meeting
- Read the notice carefully and note important dates.
- Ask for the relevant school policy and records.
- Write down the student’s account and any relevant context.
- Identify adjustments, supports or plans that should be considered.
- Prepare questions and the outcomes you want discussed.
- Ask whether a support person or advocate can attend with you.
